My First Blog!

August 29, 2009

Back in the old days, before blogging..(like 3 years ago).. here is how things were. If you had an opinion or wanted to express yourself and your views, you got a job as a journalists and people paid you.  If you couldn’t get a job, then you mostly fell silent.. or worse.  You become one of those who wander the streets, talking to anyone or who would listen,  but mostly talking to yourself.  A voice crying in the wilderness.. thou most likely it was a bus stop. And we had a name for those people.. we called them psychotic or insane.  But now we have a new name for those who voice their unwanted opinions to anyone who will listen.. We call them bloggers. And so I have joined the fray of those who choose to give out their unwanted and unsolicited advice.  Yes i have become a blogger.  God helps us.

And of course we are talking Football (which like God’s name should always be capitalized!) though I have titled my blog, Tony’s Take on Sports, because I may have some more incoherent ramblings during the BB season! Way back in the day, when ESPN first started..(yes young people their was a time before ESPN and yes I was there), I approached Roy Firestone about doing a sports comedy segment on his show.. The aptly named Roy Firestone Show.. And since he was a former stand up comic himself and a good guy, he liked the idea. But we could never get if off the ground.  So i continued to walk the streets and talk to myself.  I do remember one line from the “old days”.  The Dolphins were about to play in the Super Bowl.  ( yes young people they in the big one once upon a time).. So my line was this..  Coach Shula, in an effort to help his players calm down before the big game, said, ” Remember men, there are probably millions of Germans who couldn’t careless who wins this game”.  Though the coach was worried that his own kicker,  Ewe von Shamann, might be one of them.  It is writing like that that has keep me out of the big time all these years.

MY GOAL

My goal is to share with you my opinions, observations, and general psychotic ramblings each week of the season as it progresses.  There are countless TIP SHEETS which make weekly predictions as the season goes on and they have 3 things in common:

1. THEY ALL LOSE  (If you keep track of their records, they lose in the long run and mostly in the short run too.)
2. THEY ALL SAY THEY WIN.
3. THEY ARE ALL LYING.

I HAVE A HUGE ADVANTAGE OVER ALL OF THEM!
Which is that i am not going to predict the outcome of very game.. college and pro.. All i am going to do is share my thoughts on a few key up coming contests and general trends as the season progresses. Therefore, I CANT LOSE.  Because lets face it.. you are never going to be able to beat the spread on any kind of regular basis.. the guys in Vegas are too good!

MY Qualifications..

In a word.. NONE.. Except that I have no life and therefore follow the game pretty closely..I heard Dennis Miller say once that his qualifications were that he knew the rookie..Trune Candidate’s 40 time.. And so did I.. (4.28. the best time in the combine that year).. So that should prove once and for all that I in fact, have no life!

HUMOR

I will add some humor every week and what better way to start than with poor MICHAEL VICK.  He will make his debut with Philly this week and as a fan, I wish him well. But as a comedian, of course, I have to make fun of him..
He is going to want to run around free naturally, but his coordinator will try to train him to sit.. in the pocket.. Without keeping him on too short a leash.. but in the end he will try to roam, because you cant teach an old dog new.. well you get the idea.. By the way, do the Eagles play the Browns this year?  Of course you know where i am going.. Vick in the Dog Pound.. Think of the irony..

MY FIRST INCOHERENT RAMBLINGS ON COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Last year I was convinced that the BIG 12 SOUTH was the best division of any conference in college football history.  And that opinion lasted until the Bowl Season when reality set in… (Yes i am from Texas and Yes I am prejudiced)  But I am not Blind. So I saw that Tim Tebow might just be right about those Big 12 defenses not being that good. Which is why their offenses looked so great.  Lets us take a painful review of the bowl games.
1. Oklahoma lost.. And they were clearly playing the best of any big 12 team at the end of the year.. Though in fairness to them, not much separated them from Florida. Really one player separated them. Percy Harvin.. And Oklahoma’s Percy Harvin.. DeMarco Murray.. was injured.
2. Texas   The only winner! But they had to come from behind and needed all Colt McCoy’s skills to beat a mediocre OSU Team..  (mediocre by their very high standards that is)
3. Oklahoma State  The other OSU team also lost. Though in fairness to them it was in  a shoot out to a very good Oregon team.. ( which should score lots and lots of points this year.. Quack.. Quack).. and without their best receiver, Dez Bryant in the second half.
4.  Texas Tech was crushed by OLE MISS.. though in fairness to them..just kidding, no excuses.. they sucked.

All these results solidified the SEC’s solid position as the best conference.. AGAIN.. As long as they don’t have to play Utah!   So i am now ready to change my opinion of the Big 12 South last year. They weren’t the best division of any major college conference in history.. they were just the most EXCITING and fun to watch. And they should be even better this year…and remember 12 teams, there are 2 units and one’s job is to keep the other team from scoring!
